Hoopty Do

One of our major projects this year is the addition of two 100’ x 16’ caterpillar tunnels. These inexpensive greenhouses allow us to grow earlier and later in the season. And provide ideal trellising and irrigation for our tomato crop. We’re planting 4 different varieties indeterminate tomatoes this year. These tomatoes grow and bear fruit over and over - and stop only by frost, insects, and diseases. They can grow to over 10’ and need robust trellising systems to support their weight. Determinate varieties stop growing at around 5’ when they produce fruit, and then die off.

Caterpillar tunnels, unlike more traditional hoop houses and greenhouses, are also movable. Tomatoes need a change of scenery every year so we will be moving them around from time-to-time.

Tunnels also let to grow spinach, carrots and lettuce almost year-round. Hoop Hoop Hooray.
